We had a fabulous day in June at Bent`s Park, South Shields for AFD and the sun shone on thousands of people who turned out to support our Armed Forces.

This was the 9th Annual AFD event and is organised by the Bad-Landers Motorcycle Club in partnership with South Tyneside Council.  Many members of the biking community in the North East are serving personnel in the forces or veterans and are passionate about helping our troops. The day started off with around 500 motorbikes and their riders meeting at the Hell’s Angels clubhouse in Sunderland and riding into Bents Park – it took almost 30 minutes for all of the bikes to ride into the park – an amazing sight to see.  This was followed by the troops and bands marching from Gypsies Green into the park.  There was a very moving open air church service which ended with the Last Post and the National Anthem.

Stephen Atkinson of Arnold Clark, car and van rental of Birtley, in association with Bad-Landers MCC then presented us with a Renault Trafic van which SOS have the use of for the next 3 years to help with our events and fundraising.  This was a huge surprise and Glenn and I were overwhelmed with their generosity and kindness.

Armed Forces services were represented including the maritime volunteer service, cadets, territorial army and the police.  There were also live bands, trade stands, a climbing wall, an assault course, the funfair and of course the annual custom bike, trike, scooter and car show.  The event rocked to a close with over 100 members of the rock choir who had travelled far and wide to be there to support the event.

We were honoured to meet up with the Bad-Landers on Saturday who presented Glenn and I with a cheque for the tremendous amount of £10,120.00.  On behalf of everyone at SOS our thanks to Joe, Carole and to all the members who work so hard throughout the year, not just for SOS but for many other worthy causes as well,  and whose commitment and dedication to our Forces is absolute.   We really appreciate your continued help and support.  Thanks to you all.

Huge thanks to Michelle, the official photographer on the day, who took some wonderful photos.
